week 6. The introduction of my first draft

The introduction of my first draft

In schools, students' representative accommodates various opinions from various students and makes the best decision. In the company, superiors give command and recommendation to the employees so that the company can maintain the working system.
As we look, it can be little hard to become a good leader because they aren't the people who just carry their own opinions strongly. True leaders are people who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way to the followers; and to become a true leader, emotional health is needed. Healthy human mind is the most essential factor to be a true leaders. Leaders need resilience to bounce back from adversity, the flexibility to accommodate various opinions, and warm heart to share feelings with the followers. These are the traits of healthy minded people, and this means that the traits of them and good leader is almost the same. By researching these three traits, I could realize the true meaning of a good leader.

1. Attention grabber -
I used students' representative and superior in the company as
attention grabber. Both of them are the leaders in each group and
they will show the traits of a good leader.

2. Explains the topic
At the starting of my writing, I explained about the mind and
added that healthy mind is the most essential factor to the
leader.

3. My thesis
I wrote direct, clear, and reasonable argument;
Healthy human mind is the most essential factor to be a true leaders.

1. The Introduction

I will start my essay with emphasizing the importance of healthy mental.
Then I will add that healthy mind is most essential to the leaders who
should lead the world into the right way using "by changing our minds,
we really can change our lives." Then tell the readers the reasons briefly
and make readers think what is true leader.

2. The narration

I will explain more deeply about the topic like how does leadership
affect our life, leadership in our society, and brief story about my topic.
I will summarize what I have researched and help the readers
    understanding about my topic.

3. The confirmation

I will show three reasons(resilience, flexibility, and warm heart) why
mental health is the most important feature of a good leader. Each of them
has examples. For the flexibility I will compare Steve Jobs and Bill Gates as
they have completely different style of caring their followers. I will give
statistics that 80% of women said compassionate is the most important in the
leadership. For the warm heart, I will tell a story about Abraham Lincoln who
always tried to understand the lower people.

4. The refutation and concession

Even though some people might think ability is the most important factor
for the leader, this is not right. I will give Adolf Hitler as an example. I will
show what he have done and prove ability is not enough factor for a leader.

5. The summation

I will briefly summarize my topic and supporting details and remind the
importance of mental health. I will close my writing with Helen Keller's
   saying.

Healthy Mind and the Leaders

20613 Yoo Ji Min

Recently, the importance of mental health is growing more and more. The mind is the most mysterious, yet the most influential part which affects the whole body. As many doctors assert "by changing our minds, we really can change our lives.", we need to realize the importance of mental and try to maintain the healthy mind. However, as the world becomes complicated and as the competitive society people try to beat other in order to be the winner, people loose time to maintain their mental health and becomes selfish. At this point a person who makes harmonious society is the leaders. Leaders need healthy mental to make the group work well. For many years, people have watched a lot of leaders who made great contributions in various fields and thought that they didn't become famous with no reason. According to a new nationwide Pew Research Center Social and Demographic Trends survey, 80% of the women answered that compassionate is the most important factor in the leadership. This shows modern people set a high value on emotional and mental share. In 21 century, people think the role of the leader as the indicator to the right way, and attention to it gets bigger. A lot of books about leadership make hit. In school, teachers open an leadership camp so that the students can learn how to be a good leader. Good leaders such as Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln gets welcomed by mothers who want to raise their child like them. In this case, we should know the exact meaning and the traits of leadership.

First trait of the healthy mental that the leader should have is the resilience according to the health website mentalhealth.about.com. It has been long known that some people handle stress better than others. The more resilience you have, the less stress you get. Good leaders should overcome the difficulties and bounce back from the adversity with the resilience. While doing the work, everyone must have confront failure. It's hard for anyone to forget the memory that he had failed. However, good leader should calm oneself and restart the work to step forward to the better future.
Second is flexibility according to an article www.pritikin.com. Here, we should clear up the difference between the boss and the leader. There's a popular words spoken by E.M Kelly, "While boss says go- the leader says let's go." Leader is a person who accommodate various opinions and go together with his followers. According to forum.woodenboat.com the two computer genius Steve Jobs and Bill Gates can be a good example to explain this. Steve Jobs was a leader who was more closer to a boss.  He was a demanding perfectionist who ran Apple like a dictatorship, who typed angry emails to his critics, who regularly lost his temper when his employees do not do enough to please him, and who felt beyond his own rules. In contrast, Bill Gates was a person just right for the good leader. He was one of the most richest, yet humble man who never took granted for what he accomplished, who wrote code for years along with his employees even despite the fact that he was of higher authority than they were, who constantly donated to charitable causes during and after his time as chairman of Microsoft, who was strict with his employees while still being respectful to them. The most notable difference is that while Steve Jobs got angry when his followers were against him, Bill Gates always respected their opinion in a low attitude. Although both of them had big role in the computer development, Bill Gates would be remembered more longer as a suitable leader that the world needs. By looking at this, I could understand why people think highly of Bill Gates than Steve Jobs.
Third is warm heart. According to a new nationwide Pew Research Center Social and Demographic Trends survey, 80% of the women answered that compassionate is the most important in the leadership. True leader can share the blood, cry, and sweat with the followers. Here's an anecdote of America president Lincoln in his biography <The Real Abraham Lincoln>. During the Civil War, president Lincoln visited every hospital where the injured veterans were gathered. Lincoln took an approach to the soldier who was hardly damaged, looked almost dying. He asked the soldier that is there something he can help. The soldier answered he wants to write last letter to his mother and plead to write a letter. Lincoln dictated everything the soldier told, and watched him dying with grabbing his hands. Sharing the grief and happiness is the leader's main work.

Everyone has different ideas. Therefore some people might say ability is more important than the healthy mind. I agree that the ability is one of the traits the leader should have, but healthy mind is more essential. There are so many people who are experts in their fields. This means that there are are a lot of people who have ability. The reason why some of the experts become a leader while others can't depends on the mental health. Think of a Adolf Hitler who was a founder and a leader of the Nazi party. Think about his ability shown in bbc.co.uk/history He was very professional on the decision making and fluent on speaking. Also, he was good at grasping the mass crowd. However, no one says he was a good leader. He was the moving spirit of the Nazism and killed the Jews in a very cruel way. Millions of others whom the Nazis considered racially inferior were also killed or worked to death. He thought that only the German people with no physical problems could be treated as a human. He is remembered as excessive nationalist who destroyed the world peace. Just having the ability is not enough to become a good leader.

In conclusion, mental health is essential to the leader because of resilience that helps you to overcome difficulties, flexibility to accommodate various opinions, and warm heart to understand the followers. In 21 century leadership is growing as an important talent. As world is changing into a competitive society people try to win others instead of going together. At this moment teaching the cooperation and making the group harmoniously is the role of a leader. The reason why mental health is the best idea for a good leader is that relationship between human is the base of all the work happening in the world. Everyone wants some emotional share and mentally comfortable relation with people around them. Leader with healthy mind can lead the followers in a cooperative way and therefore the followers can maintain good relationships with each other. If all the leaders become mentally healthy, everyone can be respected and it will soon lead to the world peace. Helen Keller says, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.’ Actually it’s not that hard to be a good leader. With healthy mind, anyone can become a true leader.

week 3. Articulation

Articulation

1) My argument
I want to argue that healthy human mind is essential to the leaders. Things that come up to our mind if we think about the leaders are strong, powerful, and professional. However, I think the most important feature that the leader should have is healthy mind. Here the healthy mind can be extensive. As healthy mind have the power to change negative thoughts and feelings into positive, rational, motivating thoughts, I believe that the person who has healthy mind is the best candidate for the leader.

2) How I find my argument

First, my research question was 'Is healthy mind essential to the leaders?' I've read an article comparing the two computer geniuses, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. The article described Steve Jobs as a dictator who felt beyond  his own rules, while describing Bill Gates as a leader who loved his employees and respect their opinion. I wanted to find the difference between two of them and therefore I continued researching healthy mind.  I could find the features of healthy-minded people in health websites like http://mentalhealth.about.com.

3) New research questions

I have some questions that need to be resolved.
a. How can we know someone is mentally healthy?
b. Traits of mentally ill person
c. Is healthy mind more important than the ability for the leader?

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler

This topic has connection with Harvard Sampler <The Human Mind> by Steven Pinker.
This book explains about how the human mind is better than the computer by telling the traits of our brain and its cognitive information processing. My topic is about how healthy human mind affects the leaders and my questions requires professional mental information.

Example 1.

Steve Jobs & Bill Gates

Steve Jobs -
A demanding perfectionist who ran Apple like a dictatorship. Who typed angry emails to his critics. Who regularly lost his temper when his employees do not do enough to please him. Who feels beyond his own rules.

Bill Gates -
One of the most richest, yet humble man who never took granted for what he accomplished. Who wrote code for years along with his employees even despite the fact that he was of higher authority than they were. Who was strict with his employees while still being respectful to them. Who constantly donated to charitable causes during and after his time as chairman of Microsoft.

Bill Gates hated firing his employees and that was the one thing about his job that he hated the most. Gates admitted to the crowd as part of the school's dedication to its recently renovated Grant Center, which features the college's Offutt School of Business.
Gates admitted that the decision to fire his own employees was the hardest and that he would often believe that the troubled employee was possibly working under a poor manager and would likely be performing better under other circumstances. Gates would hand off the decision to fire employees to other executives to avoid the dilemma.

My note:

There's a clear difference between the two computer genius, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

Example 2.

My note:

During the Civil War, president Lincoln visited every hospital where the injured veterans were gathered. Lincoln took an approach to the soldier who was hardly damaged, looked almost dying. He asked the soldier that is there something he can help. The soldier answered he wants to write last letter to his mother and plead to write a letter. Example 3.

Information from http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/people/adolf_hitler

Adolf Hitler was born on 20 April 1889 in Braunau-am-Inn on the Austrian-German border. His father was a customs official. Hitler left school at 16 with no qualifications and struggled to make a living as a painter in Vienna. This was where many of his extreme political and racial ideas originated.
In 1913, he moved to Munich and, on the outbreak of World War One, enlisted in the German army, where he was wounded and decorated. In 1919, he joined the fascist German Workers' Party (DAP). He played to the resentments of right-wingers, promising extremist 'remedies' to Germany's post-war problems which he and many others blamed on Jews and Bolsheviks. By 1921 he was the unquestioned leader of what was now the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party).
In 1923, Hitler attempted an unsuccessful armed uprising in Munich and was imprisoned for nine months, during which time he dictated his book 'Mein Kampf' outlining his political ideology. On his release he began to rebuild the Nazi Party and used new techniques of mass communication, backed up with violence, to get his message across. Against a background of economic depression and political turmoil, the Nazis grew stronger and in the 1932 elections became the largest party in the German parliament. In January 1933, Hitler became chancellor of a coalition government. He quickly took dictatorial powers and began to institute anti-Jewish laws. He also began the process of German militarisation and territorial expansion that would eventually lead to World War Two. He allied with Italy and later Japan to create the Axis.
Hitler's invasion of Poland in September 1939 began World War Two. After military successes in Denmark, Norway and Western Europe, but after failing to subdue Britain in 1941, Hitler ordered the invasion of the Soviet Union. The Jewish populations of the countries conquered by the Nazis were rounded up and killed. Millions of others whom the Nazis considered racially inferior were also killed or worked to death. In December 1941, Hitler declared war on the United States. The war on the eastern front drained Germany's resources and in June 1944, the British and Americans landed in France. With Soviet troops poised to take the German capital, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin on 30 April 1945.

my note :

He was very professional on the decision making and fluent on speaking. Also, he was good at grasping the mass crowd. However, no one says he was a good leader. He was the moving spirit of the Nazism and killed the Jews in a very cruel way. Just having the ability is not enough to become a good leader.

Article from health related website 'about health'

It has always been easier to define mental illnesses than to define mental health. In the United States the American Psychiatric Association has traditionally been the organization to define mental disorders (beginning as early as 1917 when it was known as The Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions of the Insane). More recently many have recognized that mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. Even though many of us don't suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder, it is clear that some of us are mentally healthier than others. Here are a few ideas that have been put forward as characteristics of mental health:
• The ability to enjoy life - The ability to enjoy life is essential to good mental health. James Taylor wrote that "The secret of life is enjoying the passing of time. Any fool can do it. There ain't nothing to it." The practice of mindfulness meditation is one way to cultivate the ability to enjoy the present. We, of course, need to plan for the future at times; and we also need to learn from the past. Too often we make ourselves miserable in the present by worrying about the future. Our life metaphors are an important factors that allow us to enjoy life
Resilience - The ability to bounce back from adversity has been referred to as "resilience." It has been long known that some people handle stress better than others. Why are some Vietnam combat veterans handicapped for life, while others become United States senators? Why do some adults raised in alcoholic families do well, while others have repeated problems in life? The characteristic of "resilience" is shared by those who cope well with stress.
Balance - Balance in life seems to result in greater mental health. We all need to balance time spent socially with time spent alone, for example. Those who spend all of their time alone may get labeled as "loners," and they may lose many of their social skills. Extreme social isolation may even result in a split with reality. Those who ignore the need for some solitary times also risk such a split. Balancing these two needs seems to be the key - although we all balance these differently. Other areas where balance seems to be important include the balance between work and play, the balance between sleep and wakefulness, the balance between rest and exercise, and even the balance between time spent indoors and time spent outdoors.
• Flexibility - We all know people who hold very rigid opinions. No amount of discussion can change their views. Such people often set themselves up for added stress by the rigid expectations that they hold. Working on making our expectations more flexible can improve our mental health. Emotional flexibility may be just as important as cognitive flexibility. Mental healthy people experience a range of emotions and allow themselves to express these feelings. Some people shut off certain feelings, finding them to be unacceptable. This emotional rigidity may result in other mental health problems.
• Self-actualization - What have we made of the gifts that we have been given? We all know people who have surpassed their potential and others who seem to have squandered their gifts. We first need to recognize our gifts, of course, and the process of recognition is part of the path toward self-actualization. Mentally healthy persons are in the process of actualizing their potential. In order to do this we must first feel secure.
These are just a few of the concepts that are important in attempting to define mental health. The ability to form healthy relationships with others is also important. Adult and adolescent mental health also includes the concepts of self-esteem and healthy sexuality. How we deal with loss and death is also an important element of mental health. Please consider sharing your own ideas about mental health in the Forum.

My note:

From this article, I could get lots of information about the traits of healthy mental.
I realized that mental health is essential for making people enjoy their lives and create a balance. I will choose resilience(the ability to bounce back from adversity) and flexibility(adapt well in any conditions) as my supporting detail to convince my readers why mental health is essential to the leaders.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Body

A healthy mind can lead you to a healthy body – and a much happier life.
“We feel emotions in our bodies,” wrote Dr. Arthur Barsky, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in his book Worried Sick: Our Troubled Quest for Wellness.
“We ‘burn’ with anger, ‘tremble’ with fear, feel ‘choked up’ with sadness; our ‘stomachs turn’ with revulsion. Everyone tends to experience unpleasant emotions as unpleasant bodily symptoms and thus to feel physically distressed when emotionally distressed.”
“By changing our minds, we really can change our lives,” asserts Dr. Arvon.
That’s the bad news, teaches lifestyle experts like Dr. Coral Arvon, Director of Behavioral Health and Wellness at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, Florida.
The good news is that we have the power to change negative thoughts and feelings into positive, rational, motivating thoughts, and in doing so, help create a healthy mind in a healthy body.
This transformation, which is part of emerging fields in psychology focused on mind-body health, is very important because it can greatly boost our chances of achieving what we want in life, including a fitter, healthier lifestyle.
“By changing our minds, we really can change our lives,” asserts Dr. Arvon.

The Healthy Mind and Body Connection

Mind-body medicine originated more than 4,000 years ago, when physicians in China noticed that illness often followed periods of frustration in their patients’ lives. Today in western societies like the U. S., medical professionals also share the view that emotions, life events, and coping skills can have a very strong influence on health.
Healthy mind-body medicine is now part of exciting new fields such as psycho neuroimmunology and behavorial cardiology.
Psycho neuroimmunology focuses on the relationship of our thoughts and emotions to our brain chemistry and immune system.
Behavioral cardiology is the application of psychological and social factors in the assessment and reduction of cardiovascular risk. It is an important field for a number of reasons, including reducing recurring heart attacks, helping patients recover sooner, and improving family support.

Chronic stress can make us fat – and sick

It is the long-term consequences of an anxiety-filled existence that are particularly troubling. Over time, chronic emotional and psychological stress can:
  • Promote fat storage
  • Retain salt in the body
  • Destroy the body’s resistance to cancer, infections, and illness
  • Cause infertility and sexual dysfunction
  • Exacerbate diabetes
  • Deposit cholesterol in blood vessels
  • Accelerate heart rate and increase blood pressure, and thicken blood so it clots more readily, which makes you more prone to suffering a heart attack or stroke

Calming the mind

To guide people toward healthier states of mind, emerging throughout America are major medical centers with wellness divisions offering stress management, relaxation training, guided imagery, and cognitive therapy techniques.
Guests at Pritikin are also introduced to and practice many of these techniques. “Add them to healthy eating and exercising,” encourages Dr. Arvon, “and you maximize your control over your well-being.”

Stress Hardiness: Attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that are linked with healthy body and mind

A key goal of mind-body techniques is achieving an overall approach to life known as stress hardiness. Stress hardiness is associated with four important personality traits that buffer the impact of stress and improve coping. These characteristics of the “stress resistant ” or “healthy” personality are identified as:
  • COMMITMENT
An attitude of curiosity and commitment to yourself, your loved ones, your work, and the world.
  • CONTROL
The belief that you can respond effectively to situations that arise in your life, rather than feeling hopeless and incompetent.
  • CHALLENGE
The ability to see change as exciting and an opportunity for growth rather than viewing it as frightening and fearing failure.
  • CONNECTION
The enduring assurance that you are understood and validated by those you are closest to.
Other attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that are linked with good health include:

Social support

Social support, explains Pritikin psychologist Dr. Arvon, is protective against the effects of stress and has been found to be associated with longevity.

Emotional disclosure

By keeping a journal or speaking with others, emotional disclosure helps people cope with events. Also, people who use these strategies have lower blood pressure and report fewer health problems compared with people who don’t.

Humor

Humor has been demonstrated to have “stress-busting” qualities and reduces the body”s physiological response to stress.

Healthful Choices

Healthy behaviors, such as developing and maintaining the Pritikin nutrition and exercise program, are crucial for optimal health.

Healthy Mind-Body Education at the Pritikin Longevity Center

To maximize emotional well-being and the ability to make positive changes, Dr. Arvon guides guests at Pritikin through a five-seminar series, entitled:
  • Healthy Mind, Healthy Body
  • New Thoughts, New Behaviors
  • Taking Charge of Stress
  • Listening and Being Heard
  • Managing Your Moods
“The seminars help our guests develop the valuable skills needed to take charge of their emotional lives,” explains Dr. Arvon. “That’s so vital because a healthy mind can lead you to a healthy body – and a much happier life.”

My note:

I was impressed by Dr. Arvon's saying
'By changing our minds, we really can change our lives.' This is short sentence but has impact that emphasizes the importance of mental and can convince the readers.    I thought that I should quote this and use in my writing.

2.

People with mental health are....

1) Ability to take responsibility for one own actions.
2) Adaptability to changing circumstances in one's life
3) Non-defensive posture, especially when being criticized: seeking instead to learn from the process.
4) Grace, especially under pressure
5) Kindness to others.
6) Helpfulness to others (but with appropriate limit-setting, so as not be taken advantage of ... not just being a "pleaser".
7) Maintaining equilibrium in all you do, as much as possible.
